Every Christmas for the last few years I’ve contributed a story to Jon Solomon‘s 25-Hour Holiday Marathon on WPRB. This is this year’s. Thanks to Jon and WPRB for this; if you’d prefer to listen, you can do that as well. What do I remember from my childhood? Well, to begin with, this: there was a book and in this book was a drawing and in that drawing was a window on Christmas night and in that window was a face. I remember asking my mother and my father about the face in the window and about traditions, and I…

A while back, I mentioned that Transitory is being reissued with some extra stories (think of it as the CD version of an LP and a 7″) by 7.13 Books next year. Well, now that edition has a cover… Big thanks to Olivia Croom Hammerman for her design work on this. Speaking of revisiting older books, I also contributed to Reel publisher Rare Bird‘s newsletter in the form of an interview about art, rebellion, and more. It was a fun time, and will hopefully get some eyes on a book that’s near and dear to my heart. (Though, spoiler warning:…

I don’t think I’d realized how much I missed the Brooklyn Book Festival until yesterday. That has something to do with the fact that there was an iteration of the festival last year, albeit one with no bookfair due to deeply awful weather. And there was something about the experience of walking through the area around Brooklyn Borough Hall and running into people — some of whom I hadn’t seen since before the pandemic — that was very welcome. Getting to moderate a panel with Tracey Rose Peyton, Richard Mirabella, and Adam Mansbach was also eminently rewarding; all three writers…

A while ago, I started a newsletter to write about comics that had caught my eye; some older, some newer. I think — knock on wood — it’s on something of a regular schedule right now, and here are a couple of recent editions: And if you like what you see there, you can subscribe as well.

In case anyone’s been wondering… Just finished some edits and tweaks to the new edition of Transitory that 7.13 Books will be publishing in the coming months. I’m told that a cover is in the works, and hope to have more news there before long. I’m giving the manuscript of In the Sight another pass and am planning to get that over to Whisk(e)y Tit in the next few days.

I drove out to Montclair this week to see a screening of the documentary We Were Famous, You Don’t Remember: The Embarrassment. Full disclosure: I’m not entirely objective on this film, as I’ve known co-director Daniel Fetherston for twenty-odd years and contributed to the film’s Kickstarter campaign. That said, as a fan of semi-obscure cult bands and what WPRB’s Jon Solomon described in his introduction as “terminal plaid shirt music,” I am also, without a doubt, the target audience for this film. And it landed for me in a big way, I think in part because the story the film…

Had a fun time reading last month at QED Astoria with excellent human Dolan Morgan as part of the Risk of Discovery series. Getting to hear new fiction from Dolan is always an excellent thing, and having the reading in place lit the proverbial fire under me to get a story into “read in front of an audience”-level shape. Whether it’s any good is something I have yet to suss out. Will likely give it another pass before too long & commence sending it out and see if there are any takers. The usual routine, as it goes. (As an…
